Obagi is one of the most clinically respected skincare names we stock, but it is also one of the most confusing to shop. Unlike brands built around a single hero product, Obagi is organised into systems — each one designed around a different skin concern, and each one meant to be used as a set rather than cherry-picked.
That structure is exactly why it works so well, and exactly why people get it wrong. Buying a Nu-Derm cleanser because it was the first Obagi product you saw, when your real concern is congestion, means you will spend a lot of money and see very little.
This guide walks through all six Obagi ranges, what each one actually does, and who each one is for.
What makes Obagi different from ordinary skincare?
Obagi sits in a category often described as cosmeceutical — products formulated at concentrations and pH levels closer to what you would find in a clinic than on a high street shelf. Several Obagi products contain prescription-strength actives and are only sold through trained skincare retailers.
The practical consequence is that Obagi ranges are more powerful than most people expect, and they typically require a structured approach. Skin usually goes through an adjustment period before it improves. That is normal, and it is why choosing the correct system from the outset matters so much.
Which Obagi range is for pigmentation and uneven tone?
Nu-Derm is the answer, and it is Obagi's flagship.
Nu-Derm is a complete transformation system built for melasma, sun damage, age spots, blotchy tone and dull, thickened skin. Rather than treating pigment at the surface, it works on the cellular turnover cycle underneath, which is why results build over months rather than weeks.
The system starts with the Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser 200ml, which is deliberately mild because the actives that follow do the heavy lifting.
If your primary concern is pigmentation but you are not ready for a full prescription system, the sensible entry point is vitamin C. Obagi Professional-C Serum 15% is the middle strength and suits most people starting out. There is a 10% version for sensitive or reactive skin, and a 20% version for skin already well accustomed to vitamin C.
Pigmentation work is wasted without daily SPF, every single day, regardless of weather. Obagi Sun Shield Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF50 is a mineral filter, which makes it a sound choice for skin undergoing active treatment.
If you want to understand the mechanics before you commit, our guide on how to get rid of hyperpigmentation covers why some pigment responds quickly and some does not.
Which Obagi range is for fine lines and loss of firmness?
ELASTIderm for the eyes and neck, retinol for the face.
ELASTIderm is built around elastin and collagen support in the areas where skin is thinnest and slackens first. Obagi ELASTIderm Eye Cream 15g is the best known, targeting crepiness and loss of bounce around the orbital bone.
For the face itself, Obagi ELASTIderm Facial Serum 30ml works on overall firmness, while ELASTIderm Neck and Décolleté Concentrate addresses an area most people neglect until it is visibly ahead of their face in age.
Retinol is the other half of the anti-ageing picture. Obagi offers a clear ladder:
- Obagi360 Retinol 0.5% — the starting point, and the right choice if you have never used retinol properly
- Obagi Retinol 1.0% — for skin already tolerant of retinol and wanting more
- Obagi Retinol + PHA Refining Night Cream — pairs retinol with gentler polyhydroxy acids, useful if straight retinol has been too much before
If you are weighing retinol against vitamin C, our piece on retinol vs vitamin C explains why most people ultimately want both, just not at the same time of day.
Which Obagi range is for breakouts and congestion?
CLENZIderm.
CLENZIderm is Obagi's acne system, formulated with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide in a delivery system designed to reach further into the follicle than a standard over-the-counter product.
Start with the CLENZIderm M.D. Daily Care Foaming Cleanser, followed by the CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy Toner, which keeps the follicle clear between cleanses.
A word of caution worth taking seriously: benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric. Pillowcases, towels and light-coloured clothing will mark. Use white bedding while you are on it.
Which Obagi range is for dryness and a compromised barrier?
Hydrate, and increasingly Rebalance.
The Hydrate line exists partly to support skin going through the more demanding Obagi systems, and partly as a standalone answer to genuine dryness. There are three weights:
- Obagi Hydrate Light Weightless Gel Cream — for oily and combination skin, or warm weather
- Obagi Hydrate Facial Moisturiser 48g — the everyday middle ground
- Obagi Hydrate Luxe 48g — a rich overnight balm for very dry or mature skin
For a lighter hydration layer under other products, Obagi Daily Hydro-Drops sit well beneath moisturiser. And if your skin is not simply dry but genuinely reactive, stinging or flushing, Obagi Rebalance Skin Barrier Recovery Cream is the barrier repair option.
People routinely confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin and buy the wrong texture as a result. Our guide on dry vs dehydrated skin is worth five minutes before you choose.
What is Obagi360, and who is it for?
Obagi360 is the preventative range, aimed at younger skin — broadly late twenties to forties — where the goal is to slow ageing rather than reverse established damage. It is the sensible starting point if you are not yet dealing with pigmentation or significant lines but want to be doing something meaningful.
Obagi360 Retinol 0.5% is the anchor product of the range.
What about Nu-Cil and the specialist products?
Two Obagi products sit outside the main systems entirely and are worth knowing about.
Obagi Nu-Cil Eyelash Enhancing Serum and Obagi Nu-Cil Eyebrow Boosting Serum address lash and brow density, a common concern after years of extensions or over-plucking.
Obagi Nu-Gen Cellular Renewal Serum is a gentler all-rounder for skin that wants renewal without the intensity of the full Nu-Derm approach.
So which Obagi range should you actually buy?
Reduced to a single line each:
- Pigmentation, melasma, sun damage → Nu-Derm, or Professional-C to begin
- Lines, crepiness, loss of firmness → ELASTIderm plus a retinol
- Breakouts and congestion → CLENZIderm
- Dryness or a damaged barrier → Hydrate, or Rebalance if reactive
- Prevention in your twenties and thirties → Obagi360
If you are combining Obagi with actives from elsewhere in your routine, do read our guide on how to fix a damaged skin barrier first. Obagi is potent, and layering it carelessly on top of other strong actives is the fastest route to irritation and abandoning the range before it has had a chance to work.
If you are still unsure which system fits, our team is happy to talk it through — we have been advising on professional skincare since 2006, and Obagi is one of the ranges where a short conversation genuinely saves people money.
